the-solo-project was created by the Brussels gallery owner Paul Kusseneers in 2008. He was supported by a committee of international gallery owners.
Kusseneers’ intention was to oppose the trend on the art market, which was noticeably focussing on commercial and lifestyle attributes. Art fairs presenting galleries, and these likewise their artists, in the smallest of spaces were increasingly dominating events. Encountering art as a social event seemed to be ousting the perception of art as such.
Yet above all what was missing was a fitting framework and adequate space enabling exhibitors and visitors an in-depth analysis with the various positions of contemporary art. This gap was closed with the-solo-project by the participating galleries consciously focussing on selected artists.
A risk? Indeed, doubtless in commercial terms but therefore also all the more binding, passionate and……for the visitor, aficionado, the potential buyer even more exciting and richer in knowledge.
Today Paul Kusseneers’ idea can be increasingly found at other fairs around the world. An encouraging achievement for the Belgian gallery owner and (above all) real and dedicated lover of art.
In the 9th edition the-solo-project is therefore providing international galleries with their selected artists and works the necessary space once again. Space for a thorough and in-depth consideration. Space as well to present artists, whose positions complement each other or in contrast to this portray polarities.
The curatorial cooperation with the participating gallery owners is an integral element of the concept and reflects the desire to show the public a different and ever surprising spectrum of contemporary artists every year.
This also includes the new conceptual element POWER!, 50 positions: a sales show curated by Christophe Ménager, that invites the public to discover fifty of the world’s latest positions of contemporary art – and maybe to purchase them.
the-solo-project 2016 will be presenting itself for the first time at a different location – after the success it enjoyed in the last eight years in St. Jakobshalle, which is currently being renovated: on the Gondrand grounds Uferstrasse 70, directly by the Rhine River, in a spacious and attractive pavilion (2,800 square meters). A place that is particularly inviting in early summer to harmonise art and nature.
