Radical Bodies: Anna Halprin, Simone Forti, Yvonne Rainer in California and New York, 1955 – 1972 at Art, Design & Architecture Museum, UC Santa Barbara In August 1960, the choreographer Anna Halprin taught an experimental workshop attended by Simone Forti and Yvonne Rainer on her dance deck on the slopes of Mt. Tamalpais, north of San Francisco. Within two years, Forti’s conceptually forceful dance constructions had premiered in Yoko Ono’s loft and Rainer had cofounded the ground-breaking Judson Dance Theater. Radical Bodies reunites Halprin, Forti, and Rainer for the first time in over fifty-five years. read more...

Known for her complex networks of delicate lines rendered on highly reflective surfaces, this new work shows Shepherd materially reinterpreting her production. Haroon Mirza: Entheogens at CAG Contemporary Art Gallery The Contemporary Art Gallery presents the first solo exhibition in Canada by British artist Haroon Mirza. Mirza has received international acclaim for work that tests the interplay and friction between sound and light waves and electric current. Kinetic sculptures, performances and immersive installations purposefully cross wired. An advocate of interference (in the sense of electro-acoustic or radio disruption), he creates situations in which he describes his role as a composer, manipulating electricity, a live, invisible and volatile phenomenon calling on instruments as varied as household electronics, vinyl and turntables, LEDs, furniture, video footage and existing artworks by other artists to behave differently. read more...

After Party: Collective Dance and Individual Gymnastics at Blindspot Gallery After Party: Collective Dance and Individual Gymnastics originates from Roland Barthes’ notes from his visit to China in 1974. This exhibition displays the works of five artists, Chen Wei, Hao Jingban, Hu Weiyi, Jen Liu and Lu Yang. Through the interpretation of different terpsichorean forms, bodies and cultures, the featured works attempt to reveal the complex political tension between ideological control of the state and the expression of individual will. They are intricately related to the rapid social changes of modern China, while responding to the transformation and variation of collectivism in dance, the resistance and dysfunction of the individual will, as well as the afterlife of carnivalesque revelries. read more...

Lara Zankoul: As Cold as a White Stone at Ayyam Gallery, Beirut Highlighting an eponymous body of work, As Cold as a White Stone explores what the artist describes as ‘the coldness, resistance, and numbness of human relationships nowadays.’ During a recent artist residency in Italy, where she studied the local development of art, Zankoul discovered the marble quarries of Carrara through the surrealist images of Matteo Basile.
