Provocations: Anselm Kiefer at The Met Breuer at The Met Breuer

Over his nearly 50-year career, the German artist Anselm Kiefer (born 1945) has never been afraid to wrestle with the past. In 1969, toward the end of his studies at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, he photographed himself in his father's Wehrmacht uniform, posing before historic monuments and Romantic seascapes in Europe with his arm extended in an illegal Nazi salute. Six years later, the artist selected 18 of these images for a photo-essay titled "Occupations," which met with widespread public outcry. Read more >

Wu Bin鈥檚 Ten Views of a Lingbi Stone at Los Angeles County Museum of Art

In ancient China strange and marvelous stones were valued for their beauty and as reflections of the hidden structures underlying the universe. Stones were seen as fluid and dynamic, constantly changing, and capable of magical transformations Certain stones were believed to be able to speak, to emit clouds and rain, to predict the weather, to move about of their own accord, and to heal. Fantastic stones were perceived as mountains in miniature, imbued with the same primordial energies that made up peaks sacred to both Daoist and Buddhist traditions. Read more >

From Life at Royal Academy of Arts

Looking to the past, present and future of one of the cornerstones of artistic process, we ask what it means to make art from life, and how the practice is evolving as technology opens up new ways of making and seeing. Drawing from casts and life models was long considered essential training for any aspiring artist, and was once a staple of the Royal Academy’s own art school. Now, on the cusp of the RA’s 250th anniversary, this special exhibition project takes an inquisitive look at the tradition and its ongoing relationship with artists today. Read more >

Utrecht, Caravaggio and Europe at Centraal Museum

Caravaggio (1571-1610) is hugely popular across the world, especially in the last twenty years. But this exhibition will not offer the typical display of Caravaggio’s work. Instead, the exhibition concentrates on Caravaggio’s followers in Europe, and particularly in Utrecht: the so-called Utrecht Caravaggisti painters Dirck van Baburen, Hendrick ter Brugghen and Gerard van Honthorst.  In the early seventeenth century, these three young artists left the medieval city of Utrecht for a long journey across the Alps, to visit revolutionary Rome.
