Berlinde de Bruyckereawings. 2000-2014’ at the S.M.A.K. is the first mid-career presentation of the oeuvre of Berlinde De Bruyckere (1964, Ghent). This exhibition shows a hundred-odd works which have so far rarely if ever been seen in Belgium, though in the last decade the artist has exhibited in many of the most important international museums and institutions. Meriç Algün Ringborg (1983) was born and raised in Istanbul. She went to art school in Sweden and has lived in Stockholm for many years. She now shares her time between Sweden and Turkey. In 2009-2012, Algün Ringborg created several works that explore identity and belonging, directly reflecting her own experience of migrating over national, cultural, linguistic and bureaucratic borders. The exhibition is an extension of his well-received exhibition BLOCKS, which was shown earlier. Public housing has recently been portrayed as a carrier of good neighbourhood that is vanishing in our society and the public has romanticised its image. Long-established New York painters Robert Yasuda and Judith Murray, a couple for more than fifty years, show their work side by side for the first time in Duo, their Singapore debut. Judith Murray works primarily in oil on linen canvases, sculpting paint into lush, exuberant, abstract compositions in combinations of red, yellow, black and white. Yasuda, likewise, produces resoundingly abstract works, but in a quieter, more minimal way, applying acrylic polymer on fabric layered on sensuously carved wood panels. read more...
