Steven Kasher Gallery is proud to announce its representation of the estate of Jerome Liebling (1924-2011) with the exhibition Jerome Liebling: Matter of Life and Death. Curated by Liebling鈥檚 daughter, filmmaker Rachel Liebling, the show includes both early vintage photographs and later large-scale prints in black and white and color. Spanning six decades, the 75 photographs in the show comprise a retrospective of selected works that explore the themes of youth, maturity, and death. read more...

In conjunction with the publication of Hido鈥檚 latest book, Excerpts from Silver Meadows (Nazraeli, 2013) the gallery will feature a selection of images from this highly personal yet fictionalized body of work that surrounds his return to the 鈥渁rchitecture鈥� of his childhood and a particular street in suburban Ohio where the artist was raised. In Honore de Balzac鈥檚 novella Sarrasine, a nameless narrator sits outside a mansion where a ball is taking place and tells his beloved Madame de Rochefide a tale of gossip in exchange for her admiration and her body. He recounts the story of an artist named Sarrasine, who is deep in the throes of a passionate pursuit for his ideal woman, Zambinella. As the story unfolds into one of disgust and unrequited love鈥攁fter Zambinella is revealed to be a castrato, a man dressed in female attire for the opera stage鈥攖he narrator鈥檚 beloved becomes anguished upon hearing the tale and abandons their agreement. read more...
