Sanford Smith鈥檚 Works on Paper fair has always been unique in its focus on material. Being the first art on paper show, for 21 years it has offered artwork covering a vast scope of movements and mediums while still remaining a specialty show.
Faced with a struggling economy that has not spared the art world, many art fairs are forced to cope by cutting back, but Sanford Smith looks to add a new dimension. In a letter to his exhibitors last week, he invited them to try something a little out of the ordinary and bring sculpture to this year鈥檚 Works on Paper. 鈥淭his has always been a specialty show,鈥 he said in the letter, 鈥渁nd now in order to provide you with the chance to sell as much as possible, we鈥檇 like to add an area not covered in any other specialty fair in New York.鈥
Though the emphasis will still be art on paper, many booths will now include three-dimensional objects. Among these will be bronze and silver works by Richard Filipowski at ACME Fine Art, which will compliment the artist鈥檚 tempera and ink on paper Particle Red, also in the booth. Bernard Goldberg Fine Arts will feature a few sculptures from the early 20th century: a bronze by Mahonri Mackintosh Young, a pair of figures by Jacques Schnier, and a limestone head by Boris Lovet-Lorski. Goya Contemporary will bring a marble house by Louise Bourgeois鈥攐ne of six unique sculptural depictions of the artist鈥檚 country home that became an important refuge for her family during WWII. Other works at Goya鈥檚 booth will include Yayoi Kusama鈥檚 Pumpkin as well as Joyce J. Scott鈥檚 Head Shot. Tom Veilleux Gallery plans to bring figures by Robert Laurent and William Zorach.
Works on Paper will take place at the Park Avenue Armory at 67th Street February 27 鈥 March 2, 2009 (Friday noon 鈥 8; Saturday & Sunday noon 鈥 7; and Monday 11am 鈥 5pm). Admission is $20 daily, or $30 for a two-day pass. A preview February 26 on the show floor will benefit the Citizen鈥檚 Committee for the Children of New York.
