Passion for Color

Vibrant paintings are on display at McBride Gallery

ANNAPOLIS * Recent landscape, still-life, and figurative paintings by Louis Escobedo are on display in a solo show titled Passion for Color at McBride Gallery. Escobedo's artistic influences include 19th-century Spanish artist Joaquin Scrolla as well as contemporary artists Mark Daily, Michael Lynch, and Richard Schmid. "Color is almost like a person's own signature. I can tell you how to mix paint to get a color, but I can't teach you how to paint it," says the Maryland-based artist. An opening reception is held on Sunday, March 15, from 1 to 3 p.m. At 2 p.m., visitors can listen to the artist talk about his oil painting methods, travels, and inspirations. Passion for Color continues through April 5. For more information: 410.267.7077 or www.mcbridegallery.com.

ATLANTA * Mason Murer Fine Art puts together a group show this month featuring a variety of works by David Leonard, Karen Hollingsworth, Phil Ralston, Bud Smith, Linda Mitchell, Nash Hogan, Benny Andrews, and Mary Anne Mitchell. The show includes mixed-media pieces as well as oil paintings and is on display through March 27. For more information: 404.879.1500 or www.masonmurer.com.

Native Visions

CARTERSVILLE * The Booth Western Art Museum showcases the artwork of John Nieto this month. The exhibition, Native Visions: The Art of John Nieto, opens March 3 and is on display through May 24. Perhaps best known for his contemporary brightly colored paintings of Native Americans and animals, Nieto has recently expanded his subject matter to include portraits and nudes. "My art is more the result of an emotional involvement with my subject matter than a cerebral one," he once told Southwest Art. Meet the artist at an opening reception on Thursday, March 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. Nieto is scheduled to give a presentation about his art following the reception.
