Well-known art show attracts top artists and collectors

INDIANAPOLIS * Hundreds of art collectors and enthusiasts venture to Indianapolis this month for the third annual Quest for the West art show and fixed-price sale at the Eiteljorg Museum. Visitors can see artwork celebrating the West by 50 artists, including Tim Cherry, Robert Griffing, Daniel Smith, Nathan Solano, Peter Nisbet, Jacob Pfeiffer, Sherry Salari Sander, Roseta Santiago and Curt Walters. The art-filled weekend begins on Friday, September 5, with a preview and opening reception from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. featuring the wildlife art of Daniel Smith, who was last year`s Quest Artist of Distinction. The festivities continue on Saturday, September 6, with lectures, demonstrations by Curt Mattson and John Fawcett, silent auctions, a panel discussion, and a Quick Draw and art sale. The day comes to a close with a banquet and awards ceremony beginning at 7:30 p.m. The show officially opens to the public on Sunday, September 7, and all unsold art remains on display and available for purchase through October 5. Quiet Drama of Nature

NEW YORK * New paintings by Tracey Lane hang at Coda Gallery beginning September 27. Lane`s paintings often feature lone trees against abstracted backgrounds. "I am most inspired by the quiet drama of nature; trees bending towards the light, silent reflections, sunlight breaking through clouds," she has said. Pastels Everywhere

NEW YORK * The 36th annual Pastel Society of America exhibition takes place September 5-20 at the National Arts Club. The juried exhibition features over $20,000 in prizes and more than 200 pastel paintings by participating artists. Every year the show inducts a member of the PSA into the Hall of Fame; this year`s honoree is Colorado artist Doug Dawson, a founding board member of the Art Students League of Denver. For the Birds

WAUSAU * The 33rd annual Birds in Art show opens on September 6 at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. The show features 126 works by 113 painters from around the world. This year`s Master Wildlife Artist is James Morgan, who has 11 paintings and four drawings included in the show. The Utah artist has participated in the event for 23 years. Blown-Glass Beauty

COLUMBIA * Dale Chihuly: Seaforms opens September 5 at the Columbia Museum of Art. The exhibition includes 35 glassworks and sketches from Chihuly`s Seaforms series, which was created during the 1980s and 1990s. He is known for revolutionizing the studio glass movement by introducing the idea of artists working in teams, rather than alone, throughout the creative process. Chihuly`s works are in more than 225 museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Louvre in Paris, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. IN THE NEWS The 35th annual Prix de West show and sale sold more than $4 million in artwork during its opening weekend June 13-14. Morgan Weistling won the Prix de West Purchase Award for his painting INDIAN STORIES. The Robert Lougheed Award for best display of three or more works went to Christopher Blossom. The minimum-bid sale grossed $727,688, including $406,000 for TRAPPERS IN THE WIND RIVER by Martin Grelle, $82,501 for William Acheff`s DESIGN PAINTER, and $65,189 for TIERS OF THE MERCED by Dennis Doheny, which also received the Frederic Remington Painting Award.
