Grand Canyon Celebration

Inaugural event draws top artists from around the West

SOUTH RIM VILLAGE * The magnificence of the Grand Canyon has long inspired artists to capture its timeless beauty on canvas. A new event dedicated to this pursuit, the Grand Canyon Celebration of Art, takes place this month on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. It runs September 14-19 and includes a Quick Draw and four days of plein-air painting. The highlight of the week is the Modern Masters Invitational, an exhibition and sale featuring the works of 20 artists known for expressing the grandeur of the canyon. Participating artists include John Cogan, Nancy Denzler, Alyce Frank, William Scott Jennings, Merrill Mahaffey, Ed Meli, Doug Miley, Curt Walters, and Rick Wheeler. The grand prize is $10,000, and winners will be announced at an invitation-only reception at the historic KoIb Studio on Friday, September 18. The exhibit opens to the public the next day and remains on view through November 1. Proceeds from the various events go toward establishing a permanent art venue at the park. Grounded in the Southwest

Blue Rain Gallery shows new landscapes by Doug West

SANTA FE * A one-man show featuring new oils by New Mexico artist Dong West is on view at Blue Rain Gallery this month. For many years, West has been widely known for his serigraphs and prints that capture the landscape of the West in a signature, graphic style. In recent years, though, he has expanded his oeuvre to include landscapes in oil as well as monotype prints. And his painting SANCTUARY II will be featured on the commemorative stamp being produced in honor of the state of New Mexico's centennial in 2012. But no matter what form West's work takes, he is grounded in the Southwest. "Watching the sky's changing light, with heroic cloud forms overhead ... these feed my artist's eye," he says. "I love that the land here is exposed and wide open to long, distant horizons. New Mexico resonates with my spirit as an artist." West's show opens on Friday, September 4, with a reception for the artist from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m., and continues through September 21. For more information: 505.954.9902 or www.blueraingallery.com.

Classically Contemporary

FORT WORTH * The dramatic cloud formations in J.T. Grant's skyscapes give the viewer the feeling of looking up at the heavens above. He also paints still lifes of flowers posed in Zen-like simplicity and figurative works with allegorical allusions. Well known locally for his museum lectures and art classes, Grant combines classical realism with a contemporary world view - a style that has been likened to Caravaggio flavored with a hint of Dali. A show of his work opens at William Campbell Contemporary Art on Saturday, September 12, with an artist's reception from 2 to 9 p.m. The show closes October 10. For more information: 817.737.9566 or www.williamcampbellcontemporaryart.com.

Tranquil Landscapes

TAOS * Teruko Wilde has painted several series of landscapes ever since moving to northern New Mexico in 1986. Brilliant skyscapes led to a series on forests, and today she brings an experienced outlook to her Four Seasons paintings, which capture the subtle feelings of each season. "I like to portray a peaceful, tranquil side of life," Wilde says. "I want my paintings to make people feel good and bring out the best in them." Her latest works are on view at Total Arts Gallery in a show opening September 26 with an artist's reception from 5 to 7 p.m. and continuing through October 18. For more information: 575.758.4667 or www.totalartsgallery.com.

Taos Fall Arts Festival

TAOS * Celebrate 35 years of fine arts in the fall splendor of northern New Mexico at the 35th annual Taos Fall Arts Festival. The multifaceted event opens September 25 and runs through October 12. It features three prestigious shows: the Living Masters Invitational showcases nationally recognized artists who have lived in Taos for 15 years; Taos Invites Taos features artists who have lived in town for five years; and the Taos Open includes artists who have lived in Taos for one year. All three shows are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Taos Convention Center. For more information: 575.758.2106 or www.taosfailarts.com.
