Wildfires & Tornadoes
LAGUNA BEACH * Northern California artist Carol Pierce lias been painting the sky and land ever since ske can remember. For the past few years, after a trip to India and experiencing the Golden State's wildfire season, fire imagery has emerged in her abstract, Turner-esque skyscapes, in part because she is intrigued by fire's paradoxical quality. "Fixe is both dangerous and amazingly beautiful," Pierce says. This month Sue Greenwood Fine Art presents a show of works by Pierce and Southern California artist John Brosio. Brosio is known for his dramatic depictipns of tornadoes. The show runs November 5-30. For more information: 949.494,0669 or www.suegreenwoodnneart.com.

SHERMAN OAKS * Collectors and art enthusiasts should consider visiting Viva Gallery this month, where a group show by members of Women Painters West is on view November 4-21. The presentation revolves around the theme of "red," which is subject to each artist's interpretation. Women Painters West was founded in 1921 in Laguna Beach. The roster of past members is impressive, including well-known modernist painter Mabel Alvarez and early California Impressionist Donna Schuster. Today, the organization consists of 250 members working in a variety of media. "Members get an opportunity to connect with other artists, participate in exhibits, and share a sense of camaraderie," says Nancy Lawrence, the organization's president. Among the organization's goals are to recognize and elevate the standard of creative work. Meet the artists at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. on November 15.
