Randall Sexton takes on a hot topic
SAN FRANCISCO · Northern California painter Randall Sexton has a colorful, loose style. He is also well known as a masterful pleinair painter who casts his imaginative eye on the natural wonders of the Golden State. This month John Pence Gallery presents a show of new paintings by Sexton. The works are centered on a provocative theme - the environment. The paintings depict oil rigs, a pristine cove with fish, and a wall lined with the heads of wild game. The show runs through December 18. For more information: 415.441.1138 or www.johnpence.com.

How Sweet It Is
SAN FRANCISCO · Scott Richards Contemporary Art presents a delicious new show of works exploring our complicated relationship with sweets, with paintings of cakes, pies, candy, and ice cream. The show raises intriguing questions and asks viewers to consider how different artists approach the subject matter. For centuries sugary confections have served as an ideal metaphor for the human experience, evoking a sense of nostalgia and shared memories while tapping into the deeper realm of human desire. The longing for sweets echoes the pull of erotic pleasure, seduction, and decadence. Works by Wayne Thiebaud, Doug Webb, Peter Anton, Audrey Flack, Robert Bernardi, and Peter and Madeline Powell are on view. For the artist, the sweets' richly colored, round shapes and sugar-coated surfaces provide luminously pure still-life subjects. The paintings in the show explore pop art, photorealism, surrealism, and often display an engaging sense of humor. The show runs through December 31.
