Alla Prima Impressions
Cafés, mountains & more on view at Tirage Fine Art Gallery
PASADENA * Recent paintings by Armand Cabrera, Elio Camacho, and Greg Carter are on display at Tirage Fine Art Gallery this month. Cabrera, a former production artist in the computer games industry, now works as a successful landscape artist. He records the immediate experience of vast American landscapes with his alla prima paintings of mountains, lakes, and seashores. Camacho also works in the alla prima style, using bold brush strokes to define his color-saturated plein-air paintings. Intensive studies with Ovanes Berberian resulted in his ability to capture his first impression of a given subject with his distinct representational style. Carter, a former freelance illustrator, uses thick applications of paint to convey his impressions of everyday life. He is known for café and interior scenes, many of which he paints on his travels abroad. Carter`s paintings are often slightly abstract, with blurred images and sculptural forms. The show runs September 20 through October 18. For more information: 626.405.1020 or www.tirageart.com.
Living on the Edge
Looking for a moment in the spotlight
SAN FRANCISCO * Characters who inhabit paintings by Scott Harris live directly on the edge of their desires, seeking to impress while concealing their motives. Their unlikely and improbable-though not necessarily impossible-world leaves them poised for a moment in the spotlight. Whether the moment yields success or failure, they are prepared to accept the consequences. This month new works by Harris are on view at Thomas Reynolds Gallery. The show runs from September 5 through October 4. For more information: 415.441.4440 or www.thomasreynolds.com.
A California State of Mind
LONG BEACH * California Scene painting is the focus of a new exhibit at the Long Beach Museum of Art this month. California seen: Landscapes of a Changing California, 1930-1970 features paintings and works on paper that depict the rural, urban, and changing landscape of California by artists such as Emil Kosa Jr., Phil Dike, Millard Sheets, Rex Brandt, Leon Amyx, and Leonard Cutrow, among others. California Scene painters confronted the heady issues of social realism, industrialization, and urbanism by portraying their environment as a fortress of natural beauty and American ingenuity. Their works reflected the radiant climate and optimistic energy of the rapid growth of California, interpreting the forms and rhythm of everyday life. The show runs September 26 through January 11. Master of Glass
Richard Marquis shows new work with an eye for humor
TACOMA * World-renowned glass artist Richard Marquis brings his unique style to Tacoma this month for a solo show at Traver Gallery. The show features new works by Marquis, who has worked with glass for over 40 years. He is known for his sophisticated understanding of color and form as much as for his willingness to experiment. The subjects of his glass blowing range from highly embellished animal figurines to more contemporary subjects like dustpans and the "house" pieces from the board game Monopoly. One of the first Americans to ever work in a Venetian glass factory, Marquis pairs his classical training with an eye for humor. He has influenced an entire generation of glass artists who aspire to his technical mastery and the originality of his voice. Meet the artist at a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on September 13. The show runs through October 5. For more information: 253.383.3685 or www.travergallery.com.
