The Russians Are Coming

Blockbuster exhibit opens in America's finest city

SAN DIEGO * This month an exhibition titled Amencan Artists from the Russian Empire is on view at its only West Coast venue, the San Diego Museum of Art. The must-see presentation features more than 60 paintings and sculptures by some of the best-known artists working in this country during the postwar period, including Nicolai Fechin, Jules Olitsky, Mark Rothko, Louise Nevelson, and Ben Shahn. The artists are of Russian descent, left the Russian Empire before the end of the 1930s, and then created a significant body of work in the United States. The exhibition provides insights into the contributions this impressive cadre of artists made to American culture. Curated by Evgenia Petrova, deputy director of science at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the presentation brings together works on loan from museums, galleries, and private collections. The show is on view through January 17, 2010. For more information: 619.232.7931 or www.sdmart.org.

Premier Basket Exhibition

Native American baskets on display at the Autry National Center

LOS ANGELES * The Autry National Center presents a major exhibition of Native American baskets this month The show includes baskets originating from 11 different regions and 100 cultural groups. More than 250 objects are on view, ranging in size from small Porno feather baskets made for sale to tourists to massive Apache olla baskets used for storing large quantities of seeds. The display is drawn from nearly 14,000 baskets in the collection of the Southwest Museum of the American Indian, considered one of the premier holdings of its kind in the world. Because baskets are complex and often delicate, conservators have been working to restore, preserve, and catalog the extensive collection for the past six years. Tfie Art of Native American Basketry: A UvingTradition is on view through May 30, 2010. For more information: 310.882.4015 or www. autrynationalcenter.org.

Contemporary

Realists

SAN FRANCISCO * John Pence Gallery features new oil paintings by contemporary realists Jacob Pfeiffer and Zach Zdrale through December 19. A meticulous draftsman, Pfeiffer often brings a trademark sense of humor to his still-life and figurative works. Zdrale is known for his compelling figurative paintings that explore the human condition. He takes a traditional, academic approach to his artworks. Although much of his training has focused on the study of 16th- and 17th-century masters, Zdrale's compositions and subject matter place his work in the present.
