Plein-Air Painters Converge

Top Artists Turn Their Creative Eyes on National Parks

STOCKTON * This month the Plein-Air Painters of America converge at the Haggin Museum for their 22nd show and sale. The presentation, titled American Legacy: Our National Parks, brings together paintings by 35 members and guest artists who capture America's natural wonders from coast to coast. Viewers can expect to see works that depict the breathtaking scenery of our national parks, including the Grand Canyon, Zion, and Rocky Mountain national parks. Also featured are scenes from national monuments and seashores, among other locales. A color catalog documenting the artworks accompanies the show. And a reception for the artists takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. on October 2. The show runs from October 2 to January 10, 2010. For more information: 505.982.6379 or www.p-a-p-a.com.

Think Before You Buy Pink

SAN FRANCISCO * Everyone knows someone affected by breast cancer and many companies have jumped on the bandwagon to sell products that are often tagged with a pink ribbon. Think Before You Pink, a project of Breast Cancer Action, was launched in response to the overwhelming number of pink ribbons corporations use on products to boost their images in the marketplace. Breast Cancer Action is calling for more transparency and accountability while encouraging consumers to ask critical questions about pink ribbon promotions. In that spirit, ArtHaus Gallery has invited a group of Bay Area and New York artists to comment on the subject through their artworks. A portion of the show's sales are donated to the Breast Cancer Action. The show runs October 2-31. For more information: 415.977.0223 or www.arthaus-sf.com.

Exploring New Terrain

SAN FRANCISCO * New paintings by Eric Zener are featured at Hespe Gallery this month. Known for his works that depict swimmers in vibrant blue water, Zener is also exploring new artistic terrain, drawing inspiration from the book Waiden by Henry David Thoreau. In his latest works, the California-based painter invites viewers to superimpose themselves into his scenes, which often serve as metaphors for personal transformation, refuge, and renewal. Meet the artist at a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on October 1. The show is on view through October 31. For more information: 415.776.5918 or www.hespe.com.
