Prominent Scene Painter
A landmark exhibition of works by Millard Sheets opens
PASADENA * This month the Pasadena Museum of California Art presents a must-see exhibition for anyone interested in the California Scene Painters. Millard Sheets: The Early Years (1926?944) features 80 of Sheets' oils, watercolors, drawings, and lithographs. A number of the works have not been on display since the 1930s. The exhibit is also considered the first cohesive survey of a remarkable period in Sheets' oeuvre. Sheets' paintings capture Southern California's cities and small towns, dating from the Roaring Twenties through World War II. Some of the pieces were created during a time when Regionalist Art and American Scene Painting were in their heyday. The charismatic Sheets is considered the West Coast leader of the movement. The presentation establishes Sheets alongside other premier American artists of these regionalist movements such as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, and Edward Hopper. The exhibition runs through May 30. For more information: 626.568.3665 or www.pmcaonline.org.
