A Figure for the Times

LOS ANGELES.... Figurative art is regarded as a mainstay of traditional art throughout history. This month Spencer Jon Helfen Fine Arts focuses on California modernist interpretations of the figure during the early 20th century. During this time, Golden State painters brought a boldness of color, composition, and sensuality to the time-honored genre. The show includes portraits of flappers, expressionistic renderings of Adam and Eve, and depictions of mothers and children. The exhaustive survey of works features paintings and sculptures by Mabel Alvarez, John Emmett Gerrity, John Langley Howard, Helen Clark Oldfield, Otis Oldfield, Ralph Stackpole, and Bernard Zakheim, among others.

Arts and Crafts

LOS ANGELES.... A groundbreaking exhibition placing the Arts & Crafts movement in its international context for the first time is on view at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art this month. The exhibit showcases the movement from the United States and throughout Europe with more than 300 objects, including furniture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and works on paper. The pieces are borrowed from 75 institutions and private collections as well as from the museum`s permanent collection. The core principle of the movement revolves around the idea that art must be widely available, not only for the elite. Many in the movement championed the moral and spiritual uplift that would come with the revival of making objects by hand. The show displays masterworks by the best-known designers of the period, including Peter Behrens, Eliel Saarinen, Gustav Stickley, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

This month the Autry National Center`s Museum of the American West spotlights the park`s visual history through both commercial and fine art. The exhibit examines the park`s changing image as well as its cultural significance in an increasingly urban world. More than 80 works are on view by artists such as Thomas Moran and William Robinson Leigh.
