CHARLESTON.... Like a character in one of the stories of the Old West, Pennsylvania-born artist William Berra moved to Santa Fe, NM, after a storm stranded him there. He still resides in the Land of Enchantment, and his plein-air paintings reflect life in the West as well as his frequent journeys around the globe. A collection of new work by Berra is on display at The Sylvan Gallery this month. The paintings include scenes of New Mexico as well as a recent trip to Tuscany and Venice, Italy-landscapes, figures, beach scenes, and more, all created in the artist`s signature impressionistic style. Influenced by the Italian Macchiaioli School of the 19th century, Berra paints on location using an orange undercoat and short strokes so that traces of the warm tone show through. An artists` reception takes place Friday, December 3, from 5 to 8 p.m.

SEATTLE.... Artists Tobias Mohl and Eric Nelsen, whose work is as different as the places from which they hail, join forces in a dual exhibition at William Traver Gallery December 3-January 2. Mohl, a Danish glass-blower, works in a minimalist Scandinavian fashion, limiting his palette almost entirely to black and white. The resulting pieces, created through Venetian technique, emerge with subtle textures and elegant form. Nelson, a native of Seattle, employs wood-fire methods to produce intriguing ceramic works that speak to the viewer through symbols from popular culture such as women`s shoes. Meet the artists at an opening reception on Thursday, December 2.
