Pacific Northwest: BEST OF THE WEST
Wolfston`s Way

PORTLAND, OR.... New ceramic pieces by Betsy Wolfston are on view at Butters Gallery this month. Wolfston brings a whimsical and provocative sensibility to her portrayals of birds, nests, and flowers. "The work draws you into a personal journey with a surface that has been stamped, drawn into, and painted on top of," as one viewer noted recently. Wolfston is a former artist-in-residence at the Contemporary Crafts Gallery in Portland and has received numerous private and public commissions. Much of her inspiration comes from traveling abroad to places such as Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Wolfston recently journeyed to Syria to meet with displaced Iraqi refugees, and her experiences on that trip inform her current work. Meet her at a reception from 1 to 4 p.m. on January 5.

Waterston & Stone Works

SEATTLE, WA.... New works by Darren Waterston and Katy Stone are on view at Greg Kucera Gallery this month. Waterston frequently paints on wooden panels, canvas, and paper in an old master style. His pieces contain images that are fashioned from many different paint materials, including traditional oil pigments, encaustics, varnishes, tree saps, and plant resins as well as acidic materials, which eat through glazes to expose previously painted surfaces. The inspiration for much of the works stems from Waterston`s interest in arcane sciences and various religious and philosophical beliefs. His subject matter includes swarms of moths, hummingbirds in flight, and dandelions gone to seed. Stone has created site-specific, largescale installations that mix painting, drawing, and sculpture.

Divine Doors

SEATTLE, WA.... Michelangelo is credited with dubbing them "the gates of paradise." This month the Seattle Art Museum presents three panels from Lorenzo Ghiberti`s GATES OF PARADISE, one of the most celebrated works of the Italian Renaissance. The exhibition marks the first time that the gilded bronze panels have traveled to the United States since their creation 550 years ago. Admirers have praised the monumental doors of the Florence baptistery for their compelling portrayal of scenes from the Old Testament and their innovative treatment of architectural space. The three panels are presented within the context of their 25 years of restoration, nearly as long as it took to the artist to create the work. During the restoration, researchers made major new discoveries about the history and consummate craftsmanship of the doors, ultimately revealing the lustrous gold surface that had been obscured over time. The exhibition also offers insights into Ghiberti`s other works as well as his evolution as an artist. The presentation is organized by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA.
