PORTLAND, OR.... New paintings by Lli Wilburn and Michael Schultheis are on view at Froelick Gallery this month. Wilburn is fond of exploring the nooks and crannies that encompass her daily life. She finds beauty in the commonplace, whether it`s a movie theater in Portland where she once lived or in her current environs in Pittsburgh, PA, where she documents the urban-industrial scene. As both a mathematician and an artist, Schultheis translates abstract scientific ideas into paintings. "I work in the area in which those two subjects meet, showing viewers, on canvas, what the process of thinking about math looks like to me," Schultheis says.

Homage to Humber
SEATTLE, WA.... Yvonne Twining Humber [1907-2004] worked as an easel painter for the Works Progress Administration`s Federal Art Project from 1935 to 1943. Humber`s canvases of American urban and rural landscapes demonstrated a refined realism that combined the stylistic and thematic concerns of regionalism with the hard-edged clarity of precisionism. In 1943, she moved from Boston to Seattle, where she continued to paint. Humber became active in the city`s arts community and received a solo exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum in 1946. This month, marking the centenary of Humber`s birth, the Frye Art Museum presents a show of her works that accentuates the artist`s contributions while also acknowledging the challenges she faced as a woman artist in the modern era. The exhibit includes artwork from the artist`s Boston and Seattle years. Yvonne Twining Humber: Modern Painter, through January 6, Frye Art Museum, 206.622.9250, www.fryeart.org
A Touch of Glass
SEATTLE, WA.... William Traver Gallery presents glass sculptures by prominent artist Richard Royal this month. Royal`s popular Aperture pieces explore the concepts of purity and connectedness while pushing the physical limits of glassblowing. These pieces are hot-sculpted with splashes of color to create intricate visual effects, accentuated by lenses cut into the surface to refract light. Meet the artist at a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on December 5.

Living With Crafts PORTLAND, OR.... This month a new exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Craft examines a cultural trend in which vintage garage-sale finds, modern classic design, and fine craft mingle in the 21st-century home. Periodic rotations of objects from the museum`s collections highlight different relationships as well as the resurgent interest in mid-century modern design. Through this approach to displaying objects, viewers also gain a heightened sensibility for recognizing craft in their everyday lives. The show features works by artistic luminaries including Jack Lenor Larsen, Sam Maloof, Peter Voulkos, Lino Tagliapietra, and Ken Shores.
