ART COLOGNE (10 to 13 April) shows its strengths: more than 200 galleries from 25 countries present masterpieces of Classical Modernity and postwar art, as well as great names and promising new positions in contemporary art. The world's oldest fair of its kind offers collectors and art enthusiasts a first-class overview of current trends in art and on the art market. In addition to the established GALLERIES and NEW CONTEMPORARIES sectors, the new COLLABORATIONS sector also celebrates its premiere.

GALLERIES (excerpt)

The Expressionism specialists Henze & Ketterer (Bern) will be bringing two major still lifes by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner to Cologne with them, as well as a series of nudes created by George Grosz in America. His model was his wife Eva, who appears in the watercolours in the most varied poses both outdoors and indoors. The works originate directly from the estate. Remmert and Barth (Düsseldorf) offer a very personal picture of the Berlin painter Hannah Höch with the painting 'Woman and Saturn' from 1922, which hung in her studio until her death. The watercolour 'Soubrette' by Otto Dix, which was lost for decades, is up for sale for the first time. The Marc Domènech gallery (formerly Galeria Oriol) from Barcelona is showing works by Paul Klee, Fernand L茅ger and the Italian Futurist Giacomo Balla. The Galerie Schwarzer (Düsseldorf) will present a very special show: for the first time complete and in the hanging prescribed by the artist, it will show the work 'Le poème de l`angle droit' by Le Corbusier. Along with Moeller Fine Art (New York/Berlin) and the Thomas gallery (Munich), which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary, and which has participated in every ART COLOGNE since 1967, other high quality exhibitors from the Classical Modernity section will also be present. 

In the Abstraction after 1945 and Informalism sections, the Galerie Maulberger (Munich) will show, among other works, the fresh on the market 'Golden Gate' by Ernst Wilhelm Nay from the year 1954. At the stands of Karsten Greve (Cologne/St. Moritz) and the Galleria Tonelli (Milan), one will encounter works of the proto-Arte Povera artist Lucio Fontana. The gallery Marianne Hennemann (Königswinter) honours the painter Karl Otto Götz on the occasion of his 100th birthday with a special exhibition. Works by Auguste Herbin, cofounder of geometrical-constructive art in France, will be shown by the Galerie Lahumiére (Paris). American postwar art is prominently represented by the gallery Thomas Zander (Cologne), which, with John McLaughlin, is showing one of the most important representatives of Hard Edge painting. The German Zero artist Otto Piene is also being specially honoured by the Galerie Koch (Hanover). Italian Zero art is also represented with works by Enrico Castellani with the Cardi (Milan) and Greta Meert (Brussels) galleries, which will also show a sculpture of the American minimalist Carl Andre. Klaus Gerrit Friese (Stuttgart) is honouring the Rumanian-American draughtsman and caricaturist Saul Steinberg, who acquired fame for his title illustrations and cartoons for 'The New Yorker'. The Galerie Utermann (Dortmund) is dedicating itself to the wood sculptures of Karl Hartung with a special presentation. Axel Vervoordt (Antwerp) is focusing on the Japanese Gutai artist Tsuyoshi Maekawa. Returning to Cologne once again is the gallery A Arte Invernizzi (Milan), and has announced the light artists Fran莽ois Morellet and the sculptor in stone and draughtsman Ulrich Rückriem as highlights.

One encounters the great names of contemporary art at the stands of international top galleries like Thaddeus Ropac (Paris/Salzburg), Annely Juda Fine Art (London), who are bringing works of Sir Anthony Caro, who passed away last autumn, or David Zwirner (New York/London). Zwirner confronts, among other things, the large-format, colourful and ornamental paintings of the important Japanese painter Yayoi Kusama with the mixed techniques of the Columbian whiz kid Oscar Murillo and photograms by Thomas Ruff. The major Swiss gallery Hauser & Wirth (Zurich/London/New York) focuses its presentation on American artists like Paul McCarthy, Sterling Ruby, Matthew Day Jackson and Rashid Johnson, who are active in various media. The gallery Helga de Alvear (Madrid) is devoting its entire stand to a solo presentation of the Spanish abstract painter Prudencio Irazabel. The gallery Sprüth Magers (Berlin/London) will show, among other things, works by the conceptual artist Louise Lawler, to whom the Museum Ludwig in Cologne recently dedicated a comprehensive show. After a longer period of absence, the Berlin gallery Contemporary Fine Arts (Berlin) is once again guest in Cologne. They are respectively devoting solo presentations to the brothers Gert and Uwe Tobias, who are viewed as innovators of the woodcut, and to the Danish artist Tal R. A star of the international art scene is Jeff Koons; his works can be seen at the stand of Carolina Nitsch (New York). The gallery Eigen + Art (Berlin/Leipzig) confronts large format paintings by well-known painters like Tim Eitel and David Schnell with works by promising young artists. The gallery Laurin Godin (Paris) is presenting, among other things, the versatile conceptual artist Aleksandra Mir, and will show photos of her installations with an original scale inflatable airplane. At her stand, Bärbel Grässlin (Frankfurt a.M.) unites works by Imi Knoebel, Günther Förg, Meuser, Tobias Rehberger and Heimo Zobernig; the young Spanish painter Secundino Hernández is present with canvasses fresh from the studio. 1301 PE (Los Angeles) focuses on the video and installation artist Diana Thater. At the stands of Andersen's Contemporary (Copenhagen) and fair returnee Esther Schipper (Berlin), one encounters Tomás Saraceno, who recently attracted attention with his accessible installation in the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen. New exhibitor Susanne Vielmetter (Los Angeles) presents a selection of drawings and a video by Mary Reid Kelley. At Guido W. Baudach (Berlin), video works by Eric van Lieshout and A茂da Ruilova will be shown that are also part of the programme in the new FILM COLOGNE sector. The gallery Helga Maria Klosterfelde, which specialises in editions, will be bringing new edition works by Matt Mullican and Rirkrit Tiravanija with it from Berlin. Johann König (Berlin) is showing works of the sculptor Michaela Meise. Bernd Klüser (Munich) has announced the large format mixed techniques of Jorinde Voigt. Also among the highlights of the presentation are works by Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol and Alex Katz, as well as sculptures by Tony Cragg and Olaf Metzel. A painting dialogue between masters like Günter Förg and Helmut Dorner on the one hand, and young positions like Janis Avotin拧, Linda McCue and Eriks Apalais is being staged by the gallery Vera Munro (Hamburg) at its stand. Sfeir-Semler (Hamburg) presents works of the French-Moroccan artist Yto Barada, which are already earmarked for the 'Jungen Ankauf' (young purchase) of the Society for Modern Art of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne.

NEW CONTEMPORARIES (Excerpt)

In the NEW CONTEMPORARIES segment, Martin van Zomeren (Amsterdam) will show the Iranian installation artist Navid Nuur, who could also be seen at the Venice Biennale in 2011. Linn Lühn (Düsseldorf) will be presenting the US artist Dike Blair for the first time; this painting on wood will be presented openly in the room. Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler (Berlin) will be bringing, among others, works of the artist collective 'Slavs and Tatars' and of the young Städel pupil Florian Auer to their presence at the fair. Soy Captain (Berlin) will be presenting works of Matthias Dornfeld and Henning Straßburger fresh from the studio. One can encounter the multimedia artist influenced by historical feminist aspects, Lynn Hershman, at the stand of the gallery Waldburger (Brussels). Kadel Willborn (Karlsruhe) will be presenting a new side of the versatile artist Helen Feifel with hand-coloured photographs. A two-person exhibit with Andrea Büttner and Karl Homqvist can be seen at the London gallery Hollybush Gardens. PSM (Berlin) will be bringing works of the young US artist Daniel Jackson with them to Cologne. La Guern (Warsaw), a newcomer to the fair, is presenting a programme with up-and-coming young representatives of Polish conceptual art. Also for the first time in Cologne is the gallery Kate Werble (New York) with works by Beth Campbell, Christopher Chiappa and Brock Enright.

COLLABORATIONS (Excerpt)

Interesting perspectives and fresh positions are promised by the participants of the of the new COLLABORATIONS section, which is being organised jointly by ART COLOGNE and the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA). One highlight is the full-stand installation of the Puerto Rican artist Carlos 'dzine' Rolon, who will be presented jointly by the galleries Henrik Springmann (Berlin) and Salon 94 (Chicago). 401 contemporary (Berlin) is dedicating itself to the collaboration of Mary Bauermeister and Karlheinz Stockhausen, which resulted in mutually inspired works in the 1960s that are reminiscent of musical scores and Dada poems. Callicoon Fine Arts (New York) is making common cause with Christian Lethert (Cologne) in presenting new works from Sadie Benning. The gallery Thomas Schulte (Berlin), which is cooperating with Choi Lager (Cologne), will direct attention to the painter Bernhard Martin, who generates a puzzling, almost spherical mood in his paintings. The befriended galleries CANADA and Jack Hanley (both from New York) have conceived of an entirely American interpretation of COLLABORATIONS, and will be showing works by Joe Bradley, Xylor Jane or Johnny Abrahams, among others. With Alwin Lay, who has just been awarded the Max Ernst Scholarship of the city of Brühl, and Johannes Bendzulla, the Blanket Gallery (Cologne), which is sharing a stand with Bischoff Projects (Frankfurt a.M.), will be introducing two graduates of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
