Angus McDonald wins people鈥檚 choice category for second time, after his 2020 portrait of human rights campaigner Behrouz Boochani

Angus McDonald has won the 2024 Archibald Prize People鈥檚 Choice award with his portrait of Melbourne-based Indigenous academic Marcia Langton.

A portrait of Yolngu rapper and ARIA winner Baker Boy by street artist Matt Adnate has taken out the 2024 Archibald Packing Room prize.

Six-time Archibald Prize finalist Angus McDonald has been awarded the 2020 ANZ People鈥檚 Choice award for his portrait of Behrouz Boochani, a Kurdish-Iranian writer, poet, filmmaker and journalist.

Kurdish-Iranian writer Behrouz Boochani has never stepped foot in Australia and he will never see his arresting portrait hung on the walls of the Art Gallery of NSW.

Scomo is out, but Albo is in. And so is Jacinda Ardern. If the Art Gallery of NSW were not a steadfastly apolitical institution, one might imagine there is some comment intended in the selection of finalists for the 2020 Archibald Prize.

Currently working on an upcoming exhibition entitled Deluge, Angus McDonald is investigating themes of loss, beauty, love and cycles of existence in his expansive studio on the NSW North Coast, where he spoke to Katy Preston.
