FotoFest 2016 Biennial

12 Mar, 2016 - 30 Mar, 2016

The central exhibition for the FotoFest 2016 Biennial, the 16th International Biennial of Photography and Mixed Media Art, explores humanity's relationship with the changing planet. The theme, CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES: Looking at the Future of the Planet will be explored in a series of exhibitions, videos, films, books and educational programs with the participation of international artists, scientists, and environmental experts.

The exhibitions, and associated programs for CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES feature the work of 34 leading international artists, from nine countries across Europe, Asia, and North and South America. Many of the artists will travel to Houston to participate in lectures, tours, and other programs during the Biennial.

"The exhibitions present the experiences and stories of artists who have lived and worked for many years in close proximity to the natural world that surrounds and supports human civilization," says Biennial co-curator Wendy Watriss. "The artworks combine visual imagery of the earth with the words of the artists and those of scientists and philosophers with whom they have collaborated." The FotoFest 2016 Biennial is curated by Wendy Watriss and Steven Evans, with Frederick Baldwin.

鈥淭hese are artists who have engaged the natural world and humanity鈥檚 place in that world, over many years,鈥 says 2016 Biennial co-curator Wendy Watriss. 鈥淢any of the artworks manifest the artists鈥 rigorous investigations into science and philosophy.鈥 Featured projects address the anthropocene 鈥 climate change; industrialization and urbanization; bio-diversity; water; the use of natural and human resources; human migration; global capital, commerce and consumption; energy production; and waste.
