BANNERS

06 Jan, 2013 - 06 Mar, 2013
Galerie Gmurzynska is pleased to announce BANNERS.鈥 The works in this exhibition were commissioned by Bill Katz during the late 1970鈥檚 and early 1980鈥檚. Thinking of circus banners and wanting to enliven two bland theater lobbies, he supplied his friends, part of a vibrant community of artists thriving in New York City, with two dozen blank canvases on which to paint. The finished banners, large in size (most of them are two and half meters tall) are hung from grommets, metal bound eyelets at the top of each canvas. The artists who made them include Robert Indiana, Marisol, Keith Haring, Ray Johnson, Neil Jenney, Paul Jenkins and Joe Brainard. As a whole the banners display a remarkable sense of spontaneity. Individually, they are distinctive examples of each of the artist鈥檚 work. It is as if, paradoxically, the specific nature of the request allowed the artists more freedom than, they might feel in their daily lives in the studio. The simplicity of the task was liberating and the results are memorable. The banners were created in the spirit evoked by Georgia O'Keeffe when she remarked in her ninetieth year that "filling a space in a beautiful way - that is what are means to me.
