Galleri Magnus Karlsson is pleased to introduce
Charlie Roberts1 first exhibition in Sweden. Charlie
Roberts was born in Hutchinson, Kansas in 1983 but is now settled outside of Oslo, Norway. The exhibition 鈥滷reedom World Tour鈥 shows off Roberts鈥 broad repertoire - paintings, sculptures andfilm - and is in many ways autobiographical. Freedom, the artist鈥檚 band, will perfom live during theopening night, and a music video made by Roberts is part of the exhibition. A series of fifty drawingsmake up a storyboard to a film that will be shoot during the band鈥檚 upcoming US tour.Charlie Roberts creates obsessively detailed paintings and objects, each of which is its own universe.Paintings on paper and broken blocks of wood, wood constructions and rough-hewn pieces of wood. All made in a dextrous technique with inimitable energy. His paintings are filled with portraits offamily and friends, musicians, sports figures, birds, animals, corporate logos, book covers, andaccurately rendered paintings from art history, all arranged in off-kilter grids, swirling compositions ofconcentric circles, or imaginary architecture. Says Roberts, 鈥滻 am a 鈥檓aximalist鈥 at heart and love topack things to the gills. But this exhibition feels like something new to me. Form and substance aregetting equal billing鈥. In a new painting, 鈥滸reen Zone鈥, the flow of power is represented with the US in control of theaquaducts. Roberts鈥 appoach to his old home country is mixed. 鈥漌hen I lived there it was easier to becritical, but being away for a time I can see more clearly what an extraordinary psychic force it puts outover the world, frightful, and amazing. There has been no place in history like it and even for all itsmissteps, I love my country 鈥, he says. In some sculptures, shaped as sticks and shields carved in wood and painted, a darker and moreaggressive side of Roberts is shown. Charlie Roberts has had solo exhibitions at Kravets/Wehby, New York, Richard Heller, Santa Monicaand Vous Etes Ici, Amsterdam. This spring he made a large installation at Rice Gallery in Houston,Texas and participated in The Sonsbeek International Exhibition of Sculpure in Holland.
