David Robinson: In Medias Res
Newzones Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new work by Canadian artist, David Robinson, In Medias Res.
Robinson鈥檚 striking sculptural work investigates psychological and mythical themes by situating the human figure in formal surroundings. The use of strings and cables 鈥 which both connect and dissociate his figures from their environment 鈥 further describes the inherent tension that exists. These sculptures incorporate materials ranging from traditional bronze, iron, steel and silver to polymer-gypsum, cement and Hydrostone and range from intimate to overwhelming in size. Robinson reverence for imagery and symbolism, combined with his noteworthy skill, invites the viewer to explore personal meaning through sculptural form.
The exhibition title In Medias Res, is a Latin literary term referring to a narrative work which begins in the chronological middle of the plot, rather than at the beginning. An appropriate term for Robinson鈥檚 sculptures as they often depict his figures at the height of tension 鈥 caught in a moment of action without introduction or explanation for how they arrived. His figures are truly 鈥渋n the middle of things鈥 as the translation suggests.
