Embracing Light: An ImageMakers Exhibition
In Italian, the term chiaroscuro means light-dark.
Renaissance painters such as da Vinci and Caravaggio developed, expanded and refined this concept. Breaking with flat two-dimensional approaches, they used contrast between light and dark, along with tonal contrast, to create work with strong visual three-dimensional effects.
Likewise, from the beginnings of photography in the 1800s, photographers have used and continue to use and develop chiaroscuro. It is an important element of what we ImageMakers, as artists, do in creating our work. We embrace light, which is our paint brush. As part of our palette we employ chiaroscuro and its leveraging of contrast, its interplay of light and dark, its subtle nuances in light and shade. We use it to boost atmosphere, to reflect narrative, emotion, and mood, and also to draw the viewer鈥檚 eye to specific parts of our images.
Curated by Corey Madden, Executive Director, Monterey Museum of Art, each photograph in this exhibition is accompanied by a brief description of the artist鈥檚 emotional and creative intent behind the photograph 鈥 the vision that underlies and drives the creation of the image 鈥 and how light and chiaroscuro reflect and support that vision.
We invite the viewer to join with us by connecting with our work, to bring to our images the viewer鈥檚 unique perspective and response to our use of chiaroscuro and light 鈥 to join with us in Embracing Light!
The ImageMakers would like to thank Corey Madden for jurying this exhibition and, Kim Moreno and her staff at the Pacific Grove Arts Center for allowing us to share our work.
