Home Places: Andrew Wyeth in Chadds Ford
Home Places: Andrew Wyeth in Chadds Ford explores Wyeth鈥檚 lifelong practice of studying and painting a small group of old houses in his birthplace of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, where he found sustained inspiration in weathered buildings often overlooked amid gentrification. His decades-long process of studying and sketching the structures of this region resulted in a wide-ranging practice that plumbed unseen layers beneath the surface of the everyday. As he noted, 鈥淵ou can be in a place for years and years and not see something, and then when it dawns, all sorts of nuggets of richness start popping all over the place".
Among the highlights on view are the rarely seen oil painting Spring Landscape at Kuerners, a recent gift to the Farnsworth that Wyeth painted when he was around 16 years old, and the stunning watercolor Noah鈥檚 Ark Study, which he made at 87. This exhibition, consisting largely of works that have never before been shown in Maine, allows visitors to gain insight into the other half of his world and his grounding in the built history of both locations.
