Kaj Franck Prize
The exhibition reveals Simo 贬别颈办办颈濒盲鈥檚 world of forms, where nature and natural materials 鈥 with wood in various leading roles 鈥 have a strong presence. The core of the exhibition consists of variations of divans and individual studies of chairs. 贬别颈办办颈濒盲 wants to underline the importance of craftsmanship in his process of designing. Makers of prototypes, carpenters and the designer engage in seamless cooperation, as shown in particular by the unique, one-off pieces on display. The excessive finishing of surfaces has been avoided, emphasizing not only the natural character of wood as a material but also 贬别颈办办颈濒盲鈥檚 own simplified idiom of form. The exhibits also include sketches, drawings and photographs of nature by Simo 贬别颈办办颈濒盲. Designs currently being produced are represented by the Profiili chairs and Simo 贬别颈办办颈濒盲鈥檚 personal favourite, the Markiisi chair.
鈥淔or this exhibition, I mostly chose my own favourites 鈥 objects that have lived on and to which I return repeatedly, even when faced by new challenges. The need to reduce and simplify always exists,鈥 notes Professor Simo 贬别颈办办颈濒盲.
The Kaj Franck Design Prize was now awarded for the 20th time by Design Forum Finland. The prize sum was donated by the Finnish Fair Foundation. Among the grounds for its choice, the prize jury noted that, with his approach marked by humour, Simo 贬别颈办办颈濒盲 has guided students of design towards ecological and practical uses of materials in his capacity as professor at the Aalto University. In his own work, 贬别颈办办颈濒盲 boldly combines different materials, creating honest products in which structural details are often left clearly visible. This esteemed furniture designer also designs a wide range of various utility objects in addition to his work in exhibition architecture. Simo 贬别颈办办颈濒盲 has also been involved in establishing the international Alvar Aalto Design Seminar, held every three years in Jyv盲skyl盲, Central Finland.
