Experience some of the most sumptuous paintings ever made when the Portland Art Museum and Mus茅e des Beaux-Arts, Tours, bring La volupt茅 du go没t: French Painting in the Age of Madame de Pompadour to Portland for its exclusive U.S. presentation. From the time she attained the envied position of official mistress to Louis XV in 1745 until her death in 1764, Madame de Pompadour was one of the most celebrated and active patrons of the arts. La volupt茅 du gout (voluptuous taste), comprised of paintings created by 24 of the era鈥檚 most important artists patronized by Pompadour during an age that witnessed the birth of a public discourse in aesthetics and art criticism, reveals her legacy as the royal tastemaker of the time. Gathered from 22 international lenders, the works in this exhibition define an era of French peace, prosperity, and aesthetic pleasure for French society through scenes of mythology, literature, religion, landscapes and portraiture. The 55 paintings in the exhibition include works by Carle Vanloo, Jean Barbault, Jean-Baptiste Chardin, Jean-Baptiste Deshays, Jean Francois Gilles, Charles-Antoine Coypel, Francois-Hubert Drouais, Hubert Robert, Henri-Horace Roland de La Porte, Claude-Joseph Vernet, Joseph-Marie Vien, Jean-Honore Fragonard, Jaques de Lajoue, Marianne Loir, Jean Restout, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Gabriel de Saint-Aubin, and Simon-Mathurin Lantara. Two contemporary pieces by Jeff Koons and Cindy Sherman cap off the exhibition with modern interpretations of the rococo. A full-color illustrated catalogue with contributions by the French and American curators, as well as international scholars Alden Gordon, Christian Michel, Etienne Jollet, will accompany the exhibition and be available for purchase in the Museum Shop. Learn about decorative and visual art during the era of Madame de Pompadour by playing the educational online game, Le Grand Salon: A Journey to the 18th Century. The game allows players to decorate the Parisian Grand Salon of Jean Gaillard de la Bou毛xi茅re with items from the collections of the Mus茅e des Beaux-arts de Lyon, the Mus茅e des Beaux-arts de Tours, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Visitors attending La volupt茅 du go没t in Portland will also have the chance to try Le Grand Salon on kiosks installed in the exhibition. The Museum has produced two one-minute videos that focus on details from Fran莽ois Boucher's painting Apollo Revealing his Divinity to the Shepherdess Isse and other images from the exhibition. One features the rococo style of art Madame de Pompadour favored and the second video looks at the role of theater and music at the court.
