Mira Lehr: New Works

12 Mar, 2009 - 25 Apr, 2009
Having studied with Robert Motherwell, James Brooks, Buckminster Fuller, Roberto Juarez, and James and Nieves Billmyer (long time students of Hans Hofmann), Mira Lehr鈥檚 talent has been honed on the shoulders of the great. But it is always purely her own statement. The Flomenhaft Gallery is proud to present her new body of works. Lehr鈥檚 art reflects her love of nature, but is not visually a mere imprint of nature. The inspiration is there, but the works link also to her memories, her dreams and her intelligence. Her work is lush, even poetic. It is about space and how all things relate to each other. Her work reminds one of the continual flux. One form and color seems to beckon the next, as if each part of a painting creates the rest. Abstraction contrasts with natural images and it is not unusual to find collage material intensifying the visual impact. Intuition plays a large part in the results for Lehr. She allows her instincts free reign, never afraid to make mistakes. Rather, she can be energized by them, and learns from them. Hers is a journey that is purely artistic. She allows herself to move into the grey chaos of the unknown and work her way out of it. She says, 鈥淚 can now jump off a cliff and land on my feet.鈥 For this reason her work evolves. She is not stuck in one period or style of painting even if that is coveted by patrons. She develops each idea to its natural conclusion, and then she must move on. With her new body of work, she is pursuing new tones, and a variety of different collage elements, sometimes even the use of her own hair. It is used so delicately that one would not know unless told. Heavenly bodies, which were a large part of her early paintings are now gone and it is not unusual to find inspiration from DNA material. One can never be ashamed to call Lehr鈥檚 art beautiful. If that is an offending word, her paintings would not be for you. But whoever encounters her art is immediately struck by their beauty. Some feel a spirituality that could only be exuded from nature. Indeed, Odegard, an international leader in contemporary rug design, was so struck by Lehr鈥檚 paintings that they created a whole body of work inspired by them and travelled an exhibition of the rugs alongside the paintings to several cities. Mira Lehr lives in Miami Beach. She was chosen for 鈥淎 Century of Woman Achievements鈥 in the woman鈥檚 pavilion at the Louisiana World鈥檚 Fair. This year, her oral history conducted by Irving Sandler was included in the archives of the Getty Museum and Research Center in Los Angeles and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington D.C. Lehr has also been chosen by the Art in Embassies program to exhibit her work in the American Embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria from 2008-2010. With a dozen of solo exhibitions and thirty or more group exhibits to her credit, she is represented in acclaimed public and corporate exhibitions such as Yellow Fellow in Woudrichem, the Netherlands, The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Poughkeepsie, New York; Florida International University, Miami; the Bass Museum, Miami Beach, Florida; the University Gallery, University of Texas, Tyler; Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, NYC; Sun Trust Banks, Florida; GenSpring Family Offices, and many others.
