Patrick Cierpka: Neue Sterne Sehen
Patrick Cierpka uses acrylic and oil to capture snapshots, small excerpts of contemplations, on canvas. The title of the exhibition 鈥篘eue Sterne Sehen鈥 derives from a series of works embodying the rippling play of water and the fleeting motions of waves with artistic virtuosity, only to arouse the joys of such natural wonders when the sun's rays enter the picture. The theme of this exhibition, with which the Lachenmann Art Gallery commences its new exhibition year 2023 in Constance, anticipates a glimmer of hope on the horizon.
Both by day and by night, Patrick Cierpka captures fleeting moments and skillfully depicts light and sunshine with color, transporting the viewer towards pleasant memories. In addition to water, the artist repeatedly focuses on glimpses of the sky, dazzling moments of light and color penetrating the branches of trees, dancing and twisting in blurred perspectives. This incidence of light is captured as if through an open camera lens and takes us intuitively to a warm spring day, lying on our backs in the grass and squinting into the sun.
True moments of nature find their way into the pictorial worlds in an abstracted painting style, reproducing visual experiences and evoking multi-layered associations in the beholder鈥檚 eye: the sparkle and glow of sunbeams stirring through branches and twigs of trees, the reflection of light on water, the captured 鈥渘ow鈥, the bisk moment of flickering. We can observe this particularly in the monumental canvas work 鈥篫OOM鈥. In transparent layers, the colors are applied and blended, standing in direct juxtaposition with a glistening white - dissolving into a dazzling void, the standstill of time is captured. Patrick Cierpka captivates us with his luminous, hypnotic moments of painterly blur.
As the series of art works shown in 鈥篘eue Sterne Sehen鈥 might evoke, especially for the residents of our Lake Constance district, associative moments of a walk along the shore in the balmy spring sunshine, the work 鈥篟OYAL VI鈥 reveals the lights of the city shining on obscure water showing the artist's reference to urbanized landscapes and individuals, who also become part of his representation in works such as 鈥好淏ERALL鈥. The artist's works explore the embodiment of light, shadow, reflection, implied figurativeness and simultaneous abstraction.
