Tim Motion

22 Jun, 2019 - 21 Jul, 2019

Musician and Photographer Tim Motion is surrounded by photographic boxes at his home in London's Notting Hill, containing his 40 years of work documenting Jazz musicians; in the corner of the room leans a large double bass.

As we start to investigate the contents, I realise that the only seat in the room is the piano stool, we are utterly immersed in a life of Jazz and Blues. The boxes reveal prints of Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davies, Art Blakey, Chet Baker, Miles Davies, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, George Benson and Ray Charles, predominantly printed by Tim Motion himself, featuring portraits of some of the most influential jazz musicians in the history of the genre.

When asked about the exhibition title, 鈥淎n Eye for The Sound鈥, he replies modestly:"Well being a musician I follow the music, and so it does have influence as to when I press the shutter. Like every photographer we are looking for irreplaceable moments, for example one of my favourite pictures is of RayCharles at 鈥淛azz 脿 Juan鈥. I was sharing a drink with fellow photographers in the Press tent when I heard familiar big band sounds from the stage. I slipped away quietly with my Hasselblad and found empty seats within six feet of the stage!  I sat aligned to the piano stool and key board, praying I would not have to vacate the seat and crouch in the dust. I checked the exposure and waited. Three minutes later Ray Charles was guided onstage, felt the piano stool and turned towards me. Clack! There鈥檚 my picture!鈥
