Transparent: Watercolour in Queensland 1850s-1980s showcases more than 50 exquisite watercolours by some of Queensland鈥檚 most renowned watercolour artists, including
Conrad Martens,
J.J. Hilder,
Vida Lahey,
Kenneth Macqueen, Joe
Rootsey, Margaret Cliento and
Joy Roggenkamp. The exhibition traces the important role of watercolour in Queensland鈥檚 visual arts history, from its earliest colonial beginnings through to modern watercolour developments in the early twentieth century and the more recent and exuberant watercolours of the 1980s. Of particular significance to our region are the works by Joe Rootsey who was one of the first Indigenous people in Queensland to be recognised as a contemporary artist. Rootsey, of the Amu Wuringu clan of the Barrow Point region, north of Cooktown, was hailed as the 鈥渟econd Namatjira鈥 after his works were exhibited at the Cairns Show in the 1950s. He now claims an important place in Queensland鈥檚 art, with three of his works featured in the exhibition. Transparent is a rare opportunity to experience nationally significant works by some of Queensland鈥檚 most loved and respected watercolour artists.
