Deniz Uster and Alberta Whittle: The Polity of 桅 at The Centre for Contemporary Arts Φ is a floating nomadic country without possession of any landmass rooted on earth, whose occupants live, work and play together as an autonomous community. This utopian state is manifested in the form of an intergalactic vessel. Throughout the exhibition, visitors negotiate individual and governmental responses to territory and freedom of movement by making visa and citizenship applications to the Polity of Φ. This exhibition is part of a community-led research project, encouraging an open dialogue on the right to inhabit specific geographies, instigating an inquiry into who exactly is welcome in Britain. read more...

Berlinde De Bruyckere: Suture
at Leopold Museum
Vienna, Austria
Apr 08,
2016 - Sep 05, 2016

Berlinde De Bruyckere: Suture at Leopold MuseumBerlinde de Bruyckere’s (born 1964) impressive sculptures, which present the human body in its raw beauty and vulnerability, make her one of the most internationally famous sculptors today. With her seemingly timeless figures De Bruyckere addresses existential questions of life and death as well as pain and suffering and emphasizes how human existence is anchored in the flesh. Rather than seeing the human body as a fixed entity, the fragmented bodies of her waxen sculptures, which exhibit an almost uncanny realism, appear to be subjected to a constant process of transformation between growth and decay. read more...

Jacques Villeglé: Penelope in Quimperor the Return of Ulysses
at Galerie Georges-Philippe & Nathalie Vallois
6e - Paris, France
Apr 08,
2016 - May 13, 2016

Jacques Villegl茅: Penelope in Quimperor the Return of Ulysses at Galerie Georges-Philippe & Nathalie Vallois The two groups presented constitute two exceptions, two extremes and two archetypal examples in Jacques Villeglé’s boundless oeuvre. The first, Pénélope, should be shared with Raymond Hains because, notwithstanding the identified contributions of both Villeglé and Hains (and from outside the duo), it is such a communal project. An experimental film project which, after four years (1950-1954) of studies, sketches, endeavours, tests and interminable discussions, ended up… coming to nothing. read more...

Allora & Calzadilla: Performative Ellipses
at Kurimanzutto
Mexico City, Mexico
Apr 07,
2016 - May 07, 2016

Allora & Calzadilla: Performative Ellipses at KurimanzuttoAfter their 2009 debut exhibition at Kurimanzutto, Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla return with three recent works that consider the voice in its diverse forms and its potential as a vehicle of meaning, thought, and presence. Situated in the center of the gallery, the sculptural installation Intervals consists of reconfigured acrylic lecterns that serve as a sculptural support for propping up dinosaur bones to the corresponding height of their original locations within the skeletons of the respective animals. In place of a book or notes that a speaker usually relies on to deliver his/her speech, are the mineral remains of long extinct species - poetically transferring onto these otherwise mute objects the possibility of reading them as three-dimensional primary texts written into the geological record that may tell us something about our own fragilities. read more...
