Summer in Sunny Southern California
New paintings portray the icons of warm-weather fun
SANTA MONICA * Watermelons and roller coasters. Swimming pools and hot dogs. Cupcakes and cold drinks. Delicious new paintings by Carolyn Fernandez are on view at SemiPrecious Gallery through September 30. Fernandez is fond of casting her creative eye on the sunny summer scenes of Southern California. Her bold use of color and energetic brush strokes invite viewers into her playful landscapes and still lifes. Fernandez says that her love of painting food was cultivated at an early age. Her mother was an artist and her father owned a bakery in Manhattan. Growing up, her kitchen was constantly filled with freshly baked cookies, cakes, and pies. "My home would have been approved by Willie Wonka," she jokes. Fernandez's mother frequently took her on outings to Soho galleries and New York City museums. She later studied art at Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. For more information: 310.899.0910 or www.semipreciousbeadsalon.com.
Spontaneous Works
SANTA BARBARA * Waterhouse Gallery hosts a show of new works by Coloradobased painter Kim English this month. English paints on location and is known for his talent in depicting the figure in the landscape. The well-traveled artist always conveys a trademark spontaneity in his scenes, whether it's a busy marketplace in Oaxaca, Mexico, or a lone diner at a caf茅 in Paris, France. Meet the artist at a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on September 19. The show runs September 19-October 11. For more information: 805.962.8885 or www.waterhousegallery.com.
