John Nieto: Forces of Color and Spirit BY SUSAN HALLSTEN MCGARRY John Nieto: Forces of Color and Spirit. 2009 Fresco Fine Art Publications. Albuquerque, NM, 505.822.0062, www.frescobooks.com, 180 pages, 180 color plates, $125 hardcover (ISBN: 978-1-934491-15-7)

This month Fresco Fine Art Publications debuts a new book about artist John Nieto, one of the most prominent painters in the art realm. Written by Susan Hailsten McGarry, John Nieto: Forces of Color and Spirit gives readers a sense of the artist's depth of character and his passion for art. "I paint with the hope that what I'm painting is worth sharing with someone. If I make that connection, I've succeeded. I want to share my enthusiasm for the subject through the language of painting. The world is my target authence," says Nieto.

With 180 color plates, the book showcases Nieto's hallmark style of contemporary painting, an approach characterized by strong brush strokes and intense, vibrant colors. "My art is more the result of an emotional involvement with my subject matter than a cerebral one," Nieto once told Southwest Art. The portfolio of artworks includes paintings of Navajo and Apache Indians, dancers, drummers, pueblos, landscapes, bison, and bears, as well as birds, canines, and cats.

The book, which comes in a variety of editions, including a collector's edition bound in Italian leather, has a foreword by Seth Hopkins, executive director of the Booth Museum in Cartersville, GA. As Hopkins notes in the foreword, Nieto is influenced not only by his Native heritage but also by artists throughout the centuries, artists such as Paul Gauguin, Frederic Remington, Henri Matisse, Peter Hurd, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Andre Derain, Jacques Louis David, J. D. Ingres, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Andrew Wyeth, Leonardo da Vinci, and Albrecht Durer. "I like being influenced by the great artists of the past," says Nieto. "Good art, like truth, never goes out of style."

The biographic information provides the chronology of Nieto's life as well as the story behind the man who has created his own path. Nieto's travels, both domestic and foreign, have served as inspiration for his paintings, which are said to communicate often unspoken emotions. In addition to traveling, Nieto enjoys learning about his heritage, both Native and Hispanic, and he professes a passion for music and photography. He often uses old black-and-white photos as a starting point for creating something originally colorful. "Throughout the text of this book, he describes color in terms of the sounds and rhythms he hears physically and spiritually," writes Hopkins.

The book also includes bronze sculptures by Nieto and debuts his recent series of paintings that explore the spiritual persona of the Sioux warrior Chief Sitting Bull. Forces of Color and Spirit is a must read for any art lover, collector, or artist interested in the many facets of Nieto's life and work.

Ventana Fine Art Gallery in Santa Fe, NM, hosts a book signing on, Saturday, October 10, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
