EVENT PREVIEW

MORE THAN 200 PAINTINGS BY TOP ARTISTS ARE ON VIEW AT THE NATIONAL JURIED EXHIBITION IN TAOS, NM

Beautiful Taos, NM, has long been a haven for artists. It`s no surprise, then, that the Oil Painters of America chose the historic town as the site of its 12th annual National Juried Exhibition. The prestigious event opens Friday, May 2, at Nichols Taos Fine Art Gallery and features approximately 200 paintings by artists from across the country.

Oil Painters of America was founded in 1991 by the late Shirl Smithson as a way of advancing the art form of traditional, representational oil painting. Over the years the organization has become one of the most successful of its kind, and membership in the group is viewed as a top honor for an artist. Several regional OPA events are also held throughout the year, but the National Juried Exhibition is the most highly anticipated event. Artists submit their best works to a jury of top painters in the hopes of being admitted into the show. Master Signature Member and OPA Vice President Zhiwei Tu served as this year`s jurying committee chairman.

The event begins with a preview and awards presentation. Thanks to donations by OPA supporters, this year`s winner of the top prize, the American National Award of Excellence, will receive a check in the amount of $10,000. Previous winners of the award include Jan Peng Wang, W. Jason Situ, and Nancy Seamons Crookston. The works remain on display from May 3 to June 1 at the gallery.
