A must-visit art destination
One of the most beautiful and beautifully preserved cities in the country, Charleston is known for its rich historical legacy, its elegant architecture, and its wealth of cultural offerings. From the antebellum mansions along the Battery to the cobblestone streets and gas-lit alleys of the historic French Quarter, the city is as gracious as the people who live there. (Etiquette expert Marjabelle Young Stewart once named Charleston the "best mannered" city in the U.S.)
Many visitors to Charleston find that walking is the best way to sample everything the city has to offer. This is especially true for the city's two main art districts: the French Quarter, home to nearly 35 galleries (www.frenchquarterarts.com), and Gallery Row on Historic Broad Street, where a dozen more galleries beckon (www.goodthingsonbroad.com). Wander along these boulevards and side streets and you'll discover an incredible array of high-quality artwork, from Lowcountry artists to European masters. Don't forget to visit the Gibbes Museum of Art (www.gibbesmuseum. org), which houses an impressive collection of American art with an emphasis on Southern, Colonial, and Charleston Renaissance works.
The largest wildlife and nature art event in the nation takes place in Charleston each February, when artists and art lovers gather for the annual Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (www.sewe. com). The show attracts more than 500 artists and exhibitors from around the globe and draws some 40,000 attendees. The 28th annual exposition takes place February 12-14, 2010.
For an art-filled visit to one of America's favorite cities, plan a trip to Charleston, which is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the premier destination art markets in the country. And with good reason!
