A Store Show
The storefront Odd Ark LA currently occupies was previously a small neighborhood convenience store that offered an eclectic mix of snacks, soft drinks, cigarettes, booze, lottery tickets and knick-knacks amongst other goods. For this exhibition, we will revisit the history of our space as the gallery is transformed back into a small bodega-like market, lined with makeshift shelves, hand-made display cases, clothing-rack and other support structures that tweak conventional methods of displaying art and tease strategies of merchandising and sales.
Ninety-plus artists from the city of Los Angeles will contribute and create goods for the 鈥淪tore.鈥 Multiples, editions and unique works will explore ideas of utility, lifestyle, commerce and consumerism, value and multiplicity. Odd Ark LA鈥榮 location on California鈥檚 historic Route 66 will further conjure themes of Americana and the funky small roadside markets often offering an array of eccentric goods, oddities, souvenirs, strange snacks and the unexpected weird side-show attraction. Some of the works in the exhibition were pre-existing and chosen as 鈥渟tore inventory鈥, and other works have been specifically produced by the artists prompted by the exhibition theme of 鈥淎 Store Show.鈥
