A True Reflection

Oct 21, 2022 - Feb 04, 2023

A True Reflection brings together three artists who turn to the camera as a medium for self discovery and affirmation.

鈥婨mma Juliette Sherland has used her own negative experiences as a way to start conversations about her well being and mental health. Sherland has felt that art should have viewers reflect on how negative experiences can become positive if it were from making art in a studio or looking at art in a gallery. In her practice, Sherland has transformed her negative experiences into positive ones by assembling or dissecting her artwork to find the original meaning from her subconscious rather than settling for a simpler meaning at face value. For her, every situation is a learning experience and sharing her artwork with others has helped her develop a clearer understanding of how she has been feeling. Through her journey, Sherland has combined printmaking and photography by using aspects of repetition, size, and aesthetics into her artwork to represent those repeated emotions and/or 鈥媏xperiences 鈥媍an have had varied compromises.

Marzieh M. Miri is a Toronto-based documentary photographer who has studied Documentary Media MFA at Ryerson University. She also has a master鈥檚 in Architecture. Her research and creative practice explore the notions of place, land and environment through photographic mediums. Marzieh is especially interested in practice based and sensorial approaches that explore humans and their environment as a united existence. Her work has been exhibited in Iran, France, Austria and Canada. She has also worked as an architect, lecturer, writer and critic and has published in European Journal of Media, Art and Photography, Akkasee Website and Tandis Magazine. She has presented in conferences such as York University鈥檚 鈥楩uture Communications鈥.
