Abstract South African Art : Revisited

Jun 09, 2011 - Aug 26, 2011
ABSTRACT SOUTH AFRICAN ART: REVISITED  returns as the fourth instalment in a series of exhibitions about abstract production presented by SMAC Art Gallery. The exhibition intends to explore and revise this specific and neglected period of South African art history. The move towards Modernist Abstraction in South African art since the early 1950s is one of the most important post-war developments which introduced new trends and significant changes in the character of local art production.

The aim of the exhibition is to revisit and re-evaluate abstract art produced during the 1950s and late 1990s. The success of the previous exhibitions is proof of the enormous value of this exercise as an attempt to improve the significance of abstraction in South African art history, as well as advancing the appreciation and value of these types of works.

Considering the diverse and complex history of abstract art in South Africa, it is important to note that the exhibition does not aim to be representative or give a comprehensive survey. The aim is a curated exhibition that represents a collection of works by various artists who have worked in an abstract mode. The exhibition further highlights some of the different styles, approaches and exponents of the abstract movement. Understanding and reconsidering our artistic past is a process which requires numerous attempts and exercises of this nature.

Works by the following artists are included: Bill Ainslie, Kevin Atkinson, Kenneth Bakker, Walter Battiss, Wim Blom, George Boys, Giuseppe Cattaneo, Christo Coetzee, Trevor Coleman, Nel Erasmus, Charles Gassner, Sydney Goldblat, Cecil Higgs, Sydney Kumalo, Erik Laubscher, Louis Maqhubela, Elsa Marshall, Dirk Meerkotter, Albert Newall, Ephraim Ngatane, Douglas Portway, Fred Schimmel, Larry Scully, Cecil Skotnes, Frank Spears, Hannatjie van der Wat Eben van der Merwe, Herman van Nazareth, Edoardo Villa.
