What is democracy? Not just in Austria anchored as a fundamental pillar of the constitution, it can be described as the form of government with the comprehensive right of participation for all citizens. You only have to look in the newspaper to get a completely different picture. The real power lies with the representatives of neoliberal economics and thus with the so-called 鈥済lobal players鈥�. The citizen is being increasingly disempowered; individuals derive the public welfare of humanity from the conditions of the global market. In what Colin Crouch calls post-democracy, decisions are taken by experts, committees and business enterprises, the citizens resign themselves to them 鈥� or resist, protest.

The exhibition 鈥淣ach Demokratie鈥� [After Democracy] in the Lower Austria Kunstraum concerns itself with this kind of shift in power and its consequences. One focus here is on public resistance in the form of demonstrations in a time of the loss of power of democratic governing bodies.
