Alec Soth: Advice for Young Artists
Selections from Alec Soth鈥檚 newest series Advice for Young Artists are currently on view at Fraenkel Gallery through May 23. Soth鈥檚 photographs made at undergraduate art programs across the country upend the exhibition title鈥檚 promise of mentorship and wisdom, tracing instead the artist鈥檚 pursuit of the spirit of freedom and experimentation that belongs to beginners in every endeavor.
Soth does offer some limited words of advice in the monograph featuring the series, published by MACK. Written on neon-colored Post-it notes and scattered throughout the book, Soth presents enigmatic phrases and fragments鈥攊ntentionally vague aphorisms that speak to the challenges of creative practice. The book also includes a 鈥渟elf-interview鈥� in which Soth asks himself questions about the series and his own evolution as an artist. We take a closer look at a selection of images from the series, through Soth鈥檚 own words.
