Alien Body - Pushing Pattern Parameters

Jan 28, 2012 - Feb 19, 2012
The ‘Alien Body’ concept of teaching and learning has been developed by Sheffield Hallam University's Fashion course leader, Lesley Campbell. Aiming to encourage students to explore and develop a lateral thought process, ‘Alien’ padded body forms are used as a starting point to develop garments that stand away from the body so that a special space is created between skin and fabric.  When all or part of the padded form is removed the outcome is revealed, this is now the starting point for design development.  The padded forms are not intended to resemble anything other than the connotations of ALIEN.

The exhibition consists of  the padded 'alien' body forms/mannequins (neutral in colour, resembling the traditional calico fabric of conventional mannequins), as well as first stage garments and statement pieces developed from these, together with digitally printed flat pattern shapes for the relevant garments, revealing the fascinating process of pattern making.
