Apparatus started as a tool to combine artists with varying bodies of work and widely differing practices. Every edition of Apparatus finds its beginning in the unknown. Even the artists, partners and organisers don't know the connection that will bind them. Every participating artist adds to a growing archive of possible subjects which is carried over to the next edition. One of these additions is chosen by chance to form the central structure of the exhibition. In this manner Apparatus provides a collection of young artists a common thread to challenge them to tackle the subject matter in their own style and work ethic. Collaborations between the artists ensue, providing insightful new dialogue between them.
