Art & Textiles 鈥 anyone who thinks this title refers solely to carpets and wall hangings is mistaken. The exhibition impressively demonstrates what textiles 鈥 both as a material and as an idea 鈥 mean for modern art today. For there is no question but that abstraction received important impulses from the links between art and handicrafts. In addition to its historical scope, what makes this presentation appealing and special is its multimedia and interdisciplinary orientation. Not only artworks made of fabric, but also paintings illustrating cloth and video works are juxtaposed with one another. Contemplated side by side with objects usually found in ethnological museums, abstract artworks reveal the common origins of creative ideas in the horizontal-vertical grid of the weaving loom. In some one hundred works by forty-six artists, the history of modern art becomes newly legible and tangible. In the process, masterworks from Klimt to
Matisse,
Joseph Beuys to
Gerhard Richter and
Anni Albers to
Louise Bourgeois illustrate points of departure for the conception of a globally interlinked art. The exhibition was created by Markus Br眉derlin for the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg; its adaptation for the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart was carried out jointly by the two museums.
