Artists from the GDR: Works from the Museum Barberini Collection

Nov 17, 2018 - Feb 02, 2020

One focus of the Museum Barberini’s collection is on paintings by artists from the former East Germany. Over the course of one year, we will be presenting four themes in our Barberini Collection series. All works from this part of the collection will be on display in the fall of 2019. The themes are Aspects of Painting (beginning October 17, 2018), Modern History Painting (beginning March 9, 2019), Melancholy and Painting, and Landscapes (beginning October 26, 2019).

The first display, Ways of Painting, is devoted to works from the 1980s. In two galleries, it presents four artists for whom painting served as a means of introspection and self-reflection: Hartwig Ebersbach, Günter Firit, Stefan Plenkers, and Erika Stürmer-Alex. In their search for their own artistic means of expression, these artists broadened their painting style to include an expressive, often enigmatic dimension that was independent of official doctrine.

The theme Ways of Painting will be complemented by Modern History Painting. Four rooms will present mythological, literary, and religious themes with paintings by Gudrun Brüne, Ulrich Hachulla, Rolf Händler, Bernhard Heisig, Johannes Heisig, Walter Libuda, Werner Liebmann, Harald Metzkes, Arno Rink, Willi Sitte, and Werner Tübke.
