Artists of The Gallery: A Succession of Works and Artists II

Mar 12, 2021 - May 08, 2021

The second part of our exhibition Artists of the gallery – A succession of works and artists has a dual focus. The first one is on James Bishop (1927-2021), our long-time companion. His first exhibition at Annemarie Verna Galerie took place in 1976. Thereafter eight further solo exhibitions followed, as well as several publications and exhibition projects in museums around the world. One room of our current exhibition is dedicated to his paintings on paper. Eight works from different creative periods are evidence of an uncompromising and independent artistic oeuvre. With great clarity and precision, and with instruments such as canvas, paper, color, surface, line and structure, James Bishop created paintings of undiminished and enduring relevance beyond expressive gestures.

This leads to the second focus of the current exhibition: painting. With works by Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Joseph Egan, Richard Francisco, Robert Mangold, Glen Rubsamen and Jerry Zeniuk, the show allows an insight into the gallery’s 50 year history of painting. And painting – as evidenced in our exhibition – is not limited to canvases but exists equally on paper, wooden panels and objects.
