As the Snail Takes the Shape of Its Shell

Oct 24, 2020 - Nov 22, 2020

Calcium carbonate is a chemical compound that is the main component of a snail鈥檚 shell. As a snail gets older and wiser, its shell shifts in shape; it becomes tougher, slender, more responsive. Each new calcium ring secreted from the snail鈥檚 mantle a signifier of passing time. The works in this show use the material parallel of the slow and organic growth of these shells as a metaphor to discuss notions of the fold, the crease and the trace as they pertain to domestic spaces and objects. The slow act of looking, of stitching, of painting. Of carving, of drawing, of writing. Images of places and people, sculptures of items worn close to the body, materials that evoke a closer look or even a cuddle. Just as a new ring on the snail鈥檚 shell responds to the ring before, the works in this show employ a similar responsive logic in their making.
