Atelier C.U.B: Variations
Each year, alongside the works of Prix Fran莽ois-Houd茅 finalists, La Guilde presents a solo exhibition by the previous year's winner. The winning duo for 2023, Atelier C.U.B (Sophie Gailliot and Richard Pontais) present Variations, an exhibition exploring the themes of connection and movement.
In Variations, the works come in a variety of forms and functions, from the utilitarian to the purely aesthetic. All explore the themes of connection and movement, approached from different angles. Inspired by Charles Deaton's organic architecture, surrealism and rhythmic musicality, these creations are intended as an antidote to gloom. They seek to soothe, both through the creative process and in their final presence.
Each piece embodies a unique connection, where links are woven, transformed or unraveled, creating bridges between materials, forms and emotions. Meticulous leather marquetry reveals a convergence of precision and intuition. The colorful stripes and deep blacks of the leather subtly punctuate and disrupt the carved or assembled wooden shapes.
Spontaneously cut and assembled by hand, the pieces of leather give rise to creations that evolve in real time, making each piece unique. Sophie plays with color, creating dynamic compositions that embrace the curves of the wood shaped by Richard, creating a perfect harmony between the two materials.
